Baptism – Megan Holm

Picture of Megan HolmWhy am I getting baptized today? The simple answer is that God has put it on my heart to do so, and that I long to be obedient to Him. That simple answer, however, is a celebration in itself. I have often neglected the whisper of the Holy Spirit in my life, and frequently desired something other than obedience to my Lord.I have found my worth in how hard I work, how much I accomplish each day, how many people I please, and how I measure up to my own definition of “success”. But the truth of the gospel is that “success” is not defined by any sort of definition I (nor the world) can develop, it is defined by obedience to God.

Unfortunately, like most people, I have learned obedience the hard way. It is in the times of darkness, struggle, and uncertainty that I am reminded of how small I am, and that the God I serve is big enough to handle my situation. It is then that I turn to Him more frequently and trust Him more fully, because I cannot rely on my own strength. The truth, of course, is that I always need Him, but it sometimes takes those hard moments to remember it. And so the times I have felt the least competent have become the times of greatest growth in my faith journey.

I am getting baptized today because though I have been following Christ for years, it was only recently that I started seeking to live day-by-day, moment-by-moment for Him. God’s love and grace now characterize my life rather than being just a part of it, and when I stumble they quickly remind me who I am living for. “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith-and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God- not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” (Eph. 2:8-10) My identity and purpose are rooted in Him, and what a comfort it is that His love and sovereign plan are more than enough!
